At Ranger College, he led the Rangers to Regional and Conference titles in 2017, earning the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 5 Coach of the Year. Ranger decided he was in second place in the district. Gonzalez led them to the end of the Region in 2018 and 2021. He led the Rangers to 26 wins in five seasons.
Her women’s team was the Regional Runner-up for 2018, Spring 2021 and Fall 2021. Last fall earned a Top 20 ranking to finish the season 9-1-2. Five times, Gonzalez led Lady Rangers to 18 wins. Both teams are academically strong, with men holding an average of 3.2 degree and 90 percent of his players earning their degrees. Gonzalez started his career as a men’s and women’s soccer coach at Lon Morris College in 2009. Both of his teams hold a grade-point score above 3.0 and win 90 percent of his students. Gonzalez is looking forward to launching at Wiley College.
“It’s a dream, I’ve always had it,” Gonzalez said. “I coached junior college level over the past 15 years, it ‘s my dream to train at university level. Coming to Wiley College, I believe God is telling me this is where He will lead me. I look forward to building football programs and continuing the great success of former coaches here.”
The programs will compete as a team this fall, giving Gonzalez time to find and build a competitive team in the Fall 2023. The Wiley College will begin competing in the Gulf Coast Conference this fall.
The men’s program was between 1995-2005 and 2011-2018. The Wildcats have had their biggest victories in their second half with 52 games. They won the 2015 Red River Athletic Conference Tournament and advanced to the NAIA opening of the Cycle. Overall, Wiley College made four appearances at the conference, which also reached the final game in 2016.
The first women’s team competed from 2012 to 2018. After winning six games in their first three seasons, the Lady Wildcats have won 30 in their last 4. They made three appearances at the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament, advancing to the semifinals in 2015 and 2017. Fourteen players won the All-Conference and eight won the first team.
