Tuesday, April 5, 2022 | 10:56 p.m.

Weather permitting, Wednesday is in line with softball games in the VPIAL section in the early days of the 2022 season.

However, it is not too early to point out some of the key matches in each classification.

• Section 2-6A, North Allegheni visits Norvin. The Tigers and Knights are tied with Hampfield for first place.

• Section 4-5A, West Allegheni in Upper St. Clair. The Indians were champions last spring with a score of 10-2 in the section, while the Panthers finished penultimate with 1-10. The wind of change is blowing this spring, as USC is 2-0 in the stock game and tied for first place with Trinity, while West A fell 1-0 in the middle of the game.

• Section 3-4A, Beaver at Montour. The two best teams in the section a year ago meet for first place on Wednesday with defending champions Bobkets 1-0 and host Spartans 2-0.

• Section 3-3A, Southmoreland in South Allegheni. Two play-off teams from a year ago, both Scotland and Gladiators have 1-0 in the draw, tied in first place with Waynesburg Central.

• Section 2-2A, Apollo Ridge at Sera Catholic. The Vikings have 1-0 in the section and 2-1 in total, but will have their hands full as the home Eagles have 2-0 in the section, 4-0 in total and have beaten their opponents 51-3.

• Section 1-A, Union on the South Side. This is the start of the section for the two teams that finished as champions in 2021. Both teams are perfect in the game without interceptions, as the Scots enter with a score of 4-0, while the Rems are 3-0 overall.

Gang green

A pair of last season’s play-off teams in the VPIAL lacrosse for girls meet in a Section 2-2A match on Wednesday.

Last season, Seton LaSal finished in third place, while South Fayet qualified for the postseason as sixth.

Both the Rebels and the Lions have been knocked out since the postseason in the first round.

The two teams are starting well this spring, combined for an overall record of 7-1 in their match.

South Fajet is 2-0 in the section while Seton LaSal is 1-1.

Another key match in section 2-2A on Wednesday is played by the defending champion Mars in the Chartier Valley. Both teams have a total score of 3-0 entering the competition.

The singles section begins

While most spring sports are just starting to play sections, VPIAL boys’ tennis is starting its post-season schedule.

On Wednesday, each of the four sections 3A and 2A will hold a two-day qualifying tournament for the 2022 VPIAL Individual Tennis Championship for boys next week.

Each school can register a maximum of two players for the sections.

The first round, quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Wednesday, and the championship and consolation matches are scheduled for Thursday.

The four best players from each section will qualify for the district championship.
