What happened to Khamzat Chimaev’s lip to gain an injury as the MMA superstar prepares to face Kevin Holland at UFC 279?
UFC 279 was always going to be dramatic, but not many of us expected the headlines to be made prior to the actual fights themselves.
From backstage brawls to weight cut disasters, the one dominating the headlines has been Chechnyan-born Swedish national Khamzat Chimaev, as he looks to continue his incredible rise in the UFC’s Welterweight rankings.
With a shaved head and bushy beard, Chimaev certainly has his own look; but many fans are curious as to what happened with his lip, which features a nasty-looking injury.
What happened to Khamzat Chimaev’s lip?
Khamzat Chimaev does not have a cleft lip from a genetic condition as many on social media would have you believe, it was the result of a nasty injury he had as a young child.
According to Chimaev, via Sport Bible, “My mom told me this, but I don’t remember myself. I was two years old and we had a big staircase in our house and I fell down on the concrete.”
A horrible injury for a small child, “I had a ripped lip; a couple of my teeth were knocked out and I also broke my nose” he said.
However, even as he prepares for his UFC 279 co-main event feature, Chimaev is feeling the lasting effects of the injury, revealing that he “still can’t breathe from my right nostril.”
The injury has been the subject of targeted insults against the UFC superstar, with Middleweight world champion Israel Adesanya calling Chimaev “rat lip” in an interview with Yahoo Sports from 2020.
“Have you seen him fight? The rat lip? Tim said he might have fought a lower level of competition so far. That’s what Tim said. Fair enough. I’ll see him fight probably this weekend and I’ll make my assessment.” – Israel Adesanya, via Yahoo Sports.
Chimaev would take to social media to respond in a now-deleted Tweet, via MMA Fighting, “What do you say about me, it will cost you your belt, if you’re still the champion. Good luck.”
Khamzat’s weight-cut disaster lands him in Holland
It’s certainly been an eventful week for the UFC’s Khamzat Chimaev, first having a heated argument with Middleweight Paulo Costa at the UFC Performance Institute.
This was then followed by a backstage brawl with Kevin Holland and then Nate Diaz’s entourage; which resulted in the pre-fight press conference being canceled whilst Dana White was on stage.
Finally, rumours began flying during the weigh-ins that Chimaev was 8-10lbs overweight and would eventually get on the scales at a shocking 178.5lbs – significantly over the 171lbs Welterweight limit.
The reason is said to be a “medical issue”, per Ariel Helwani, but a more specific explanation has not yet been disclosed from either Chimaev, his team or the UFC medical staff.
Chimaev will now face Kevin Holland at a Catchweight of 180lbs, with his original opponent Nate Diaz set to face Tony Ferguson in the main event – both fights are scheduled for five rounds.
