Last night, Toulouse Olympique announced the departure of Super League star Tony Gigot.
Gigot, who won the Lance Todd Trophy in Catalans Dragons’ first Challenge Cup Final win in 2018, had been a key part of the Toulouse outfit during the 2022 season.
However, towards the back end of the year, the French livewire was pushed out of the side and has now left the Stade Ernest Wallon.
Prior to signing for Toulouse last season, Gigot was playing for Avignon. That spell at Avignon in 2021 was the third spell with his hometown club and there is a chance he may return for a fourth.
However, the 31-year-old definitely still has plenty to offer and would be potentially a good pickup for a Super League or Championship side.
So if someone does take a punt on the French international, where could he end up? Here are three UK teams where Gigot could fit in.
This would perhaps be the most likely Super League destination for Gigot. Having established himself as a top flight player in recent seasons, the Frenchman would bring some much needed pizzazz to a Wakefield team that has lost a lot of its core – Jacob Miller, David Fifita and Tinirau Arona for example have all departed Belle Vue at the end of 2022. Gigot would bring a new dimension to the Trinity side and could form an exciting partnership with Mason Lino in the halves.
Regardless of whether or not Featherstone achieves promotion in 2022, Gigot would be a good fit for the West Yorkshire side. With the ability to play fullback, center and in the halves, Gigot would bring a great versatility to Rovers that has sometimes been lacking. And, with great Super League experience under his belt, the Frenchman would be an added calmness under pressure.
Although Willie Peters has apparently finished off his recruitment, Gigot would be the icing on top of the cake. Although on the wrong side of 30, his experience could prove vital to helping the likes of Mikey Lewis and Rowan Milnes develop in the halves. Despite Gigot perhaps losing a bit of that speed that he used to possess in abundance, that has now developed into a more wise and well-rounded player.
