Sporting KC II striker Mataeo Bunburi will join the Canadian U-20 at the first youth national team camp in more than two years

Sporting KC II striker Mataeo Bunburi has been selected to the Canadian U-20 men’s national team for a 13-day camp from April 10 to 22, with two international youth matches against Costa Rica on April 15 and 21, in preparation for the 2022 Concacaf Championship for men under 20 this summer.

Bunbury and Canada U-20 were drawn in Group E for the 2022 Concacaf Championship, along with the United States, Cuba and St. Kitts and Nevis. The three best teams from the group will advance to the round of 16.

The 16-year-old striker and product of the Sporting KC Academy wants to make his national team debut this April. Bunberry will leave a good impression as he and the other 24 members of this camp try to enter the list of 20 players for the 2022 Concacaf Championship. This camp will mark the first men’s youth camp in more than two years.

The 2022 Concacaf Championship is a double qualifying tournament with a place at the U23 World Championships in Indonesia in 2023 and the 2024 Olympic Games. The tournament will be held from June 18 to July 3 in Honduras, and the four best teams will qualify for the U20 World Cup, and the first two teams will qualify for the Olympic Games.

The name Bunbury has deep roots in Sporting Kansas City as Matae Bunbury’s father Alex Banbury scored four goals and added four assists for the Kansas City Wizards from 1999-2000. His older brother Till Banbury was selected to Sporting KC in 2010, scored 24 goals and eight assists and helped the club win the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in 2012 and the MLS Cup in 2013.

Bunbury joined the Sporting KC Academy in 2020, competing for U-17 and U-19 before signing an academic contract with SKC II in September 2021. Ahead of the MLS NEXT Pro season 2022, Bunbury signed another academic contract with SKC II . Last week, he scored his first professional goal in SKC II’s 2-0 win over Minnesota United.

SKC II returns to action this week, April 10 at 18:00 CT when they welcome Houston Dynamo 2 at Rock Chalk Park in the club’s first home game of the season and the inaugural match in Lawrence, Kansas. Fans can buy tickets on or join to see all the promotions.
