LOS ANGELES (AP) – Rapper Tory Lanez was briefly jailed on Tuesday after a judge allegedly violated a security order in a felony assault case in which he is accused of shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the legs.
Lanez, 29, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was chained in a Los Angeles court and sent to prison. He was released on bail and released several hours later.
At the trial, Supreme Court Justice David Herriford found that Peterson had violated orders not to associate with or harass Megan and not to discuss the evidence with outsiders.
Although Peterson did not contact Megan directly, Herriford said some of his tweets seemed to be clear messages to him, and instructed Peterson not to mention him. on social media.
Peterson’s attorney, Shawn Holley, told the court he did not provide information to a Twitter user who wrote in February that Peterson’s DNA was not found in a damaged weapon.
In his argument, Holley said the tweet, which had been deleted, was not entirely accurate. He said the investigation revealed that there were four DNA suppliers with a handgun, which led to uncertainty as to whether Peterson’s DNA had been found. He said his DNA had not been found in a gun magazine.
The prosecutor had requested that Peterson’s bail be annulled or increased to $ 5 million.
“We are pleased that the Court rejected those shocking requests,” Holly said in a post-trial e-mail.
Instead, the judge increased the bail from $ 250,000 Peterson imposed after his arrest in 2020 to $ 350,000.
The trial date was set for September, and Peterson was told to return for the June trial. He blames himself.
Peterson, Megan and others were in a Hollywood HV SUV after the party on July 12, 2020. Authorities allege he shot her in the leg during an argument after she left.
After months of speculation and publicity about the incident, Peterson was charged with aggravated assault in October 2020, and in December last year the judge found there was enough evidence to go to trial.
After his first arrest, Peterson wrote that “the truth will be revealed.”
Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has had great success with mixtapes and recordings of major labels since his career began in 2009, and his last two albums reached 10 high in the Billboard nations.
Megan Thee Stallion was already a big star during the event, and has been a success ever since. He won a Grammy for a talented new singer in 2021, and won No. 1 songs. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his song “Savage” with Beyoncé and a guest on Cardi B.’s “WAP”.
