Omaha metro high school boys, girls soccer teams take home district championships, now prepare for state

BOYS Omaha Bryan made school history Thursday night qualifying for the boys state soccer tournament for just the second time, the first time in seven years. They became the only Bears team to go to state in any team sport this school year.It was a great first half in front of a big crowd at Bryan. Five goals were made in the period. The first two were by Caesar Hernandez as he knocked in the first goal of the game 18 minutes in and scored on a penalty kick a short time later.Lincoln Southeast answered with a crossing pass to set up Henry Moberly. That would be the first of two bang-bang goals for the Knights to tie the game 2-2.The go-ahead and eventual game-winner was scored just before half. Francisco Barajas-Castro is the hero for Omaha Bryan. Omaha Bryan is going to state for the first time since 2015. The final score was 3-2.In the A-1 District final, Gretna was up 3-0 over Millard North at the half.The Dragons looked to add a fourth goal in the second half as Mike Stukenholtz fed Maguire Perkins whose shot would save off the line by Ben Priest.Later in the half, Perkins rounds the keeper but Priest made another clearance.It didn’t matter in the end, Gretna takes down Millard North . The final score was 3-0.GIRLSThe Gretna girls are trying to win back-to-back championships in school history and were on a mission Thursday night, trying to be the first Class A repeat champ in five years.The Dragons hosted Papio in the District A-2 final. It didn’t take long for the dragons to strike as Ava Makovicka puts the Dragons up 1-o less than six minutes into the start of the game.Less than a minute, later it’s two Dragons working together. Savannah Defini’s cross finds the head of Allison Marshall and a perfectly placed header made it 2-0.Dragons would tack on a third in the 10th minute, from Defini off the freak kick. The champs head back to Morrison, Gretna wins 4-0 against Papio.Westside took on Elkhorn South Thursday night for the third meeting of the season between the two teams for a spot at state.The game was scoreless until the 62nd minute. The ball fell to Addison Kasel who beat the keeper and puts the Warriors up 1-0.With under three minutes to go, Westside would seal the deal as Kasel nets it from distance into the bottom corner sending the Warriors to Morrison.Westside weathers the storm and defeats Elkhorn South 2-0.
