Nikki Hiltz breaks records in win at 2022 Sir Walter Miler in North Carolina

Nikki Hiltz, a non-binary professional runner out of Aptos, broke two records with her win in the 2022 Sir Walter Miler at Cardinal Gibbons High in Raleigh, NC, on Friday.

Hiltz, running for lululemon, won the women’s race in a meet- and state-record time of 4 minutes, 21.89 seconds and won $5,000. Eleanor Fulton, running unattached, took second in 4:23.65. Elly Henes of adidas took third in 4:27.66.

Hiltz posted a 4:26.48 finish in 2021 and placed second behind Josette Norris, who won in 4:25.92.

Golf

US Kids Golf World Championship: Former Soquel resident Hunter Williams is tied for 16th entering the final round of the US Kids Golf World Championship in NC

Williams, competing in the boys’ 8-year-olds division, has a 5-over-par 77 total after shooting rounds of 38 and 39 on the back nine of the Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club at Pinehurst Resort.

William Yoder of Dublin, Ohio, leads with a 3-under 69 total.

Beach volleyball

Gold Series Atlanta Open: Santa Cruz’s Jacob Landel and teammate Lev Priima of Hermosa Beach dropped their main draw opener at the AVP Gold Series Atlanta Open on Friday.

Landel and Priima, the No. 16 seed, lost to No. 1 Theo Brunner of Torrance and Chaim Schalk of Gardena, 21-18, 21-16.

Landel and Priima face No. 8 Billy Allen of Redondo Beach and Jeremy Casebeer of Santa Barbara in contender’s bracket action Saturday at noon.

Landel is a former All-American for UC Santa Cruz who serves as interim head coach of the men’s indoor team.

Foreman named to U20 national team: UCSC’s Dylan Foreman, named to Team USA’s Under-20 Beach Volleyball National Team last month, will compete in the 2022 CAZOVA U23 Beach Volleyball Tour in Trinidad & Tobago on Aug. 19-21.

Foreman, a 6-foot-5 outside who hails from Santa Barbara, hit .309 with 44 kills in six matches his freshman year with the Banana Slugs.
