1.20, Newbury – Coral Get Closer To The Action Novices’ Hurdle (2m 4½f)
Dan Skelton is represented in this novice hurdle contest by HEEZER GEEZER, and the Lodge Hill team could be set for early success at this two-day meeting. The five-year-old was a bumper winner at Doncaster last season, scoring impressively at the South Yorkshire venue.
The gelding was unfortunate not to make a winning start over hurdles. He finished second at Aintree in a 2m 4f contest, going down by less than a length. You would expect him to step up on that appearance and it may be enough to land the top prize this time.
Selection: Heezer Geezer @ 10/3 with Paddy Power
1.55, Newbury – Coral Racing Club Novices’ Chase (2m 4f, Grade 2)
Grade 1 winning hurdler STAGE STAR got off the mark at the first time of asking over fences. He looked a natural for timber when he made it all at Warwick earlier this month, beating West Cork and Skytastic.
Paul Nicholls’s novice was pulled up on his final two starts of last season. He had wind surgery back in July, so he looks to be over the issue he had. His biggest challenger in this race looks to be Beauport, but the Ditcheat runner will be getting 5lb from his rival, so that is a big advantage for him.
Selection: Stage Star @ 4/5 with Paddy Power
2.30, Newbury – Coral Bet Bundles Handicap Chase (2m 4f)
BEAKSTOWN showed what he was capable of when he prevailed in a Listed race at Ayr back in April over the extended 2m 4f trip at the western Scottish course. He has also come close on several occasions over fences.
Dan Skelton’s runner made a return to action in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree last month, finishing a respectable fourth.
As we saw last weekend, the runner-up in that contest, Hitman, has come out and won in good style. Expect to see improvement for the nine-year-old here, especially as he will be receiving weight from the rest of the field.
Selection: Beakstown @ 11/4 with Paddy Power
3.05, Newbury – Coral Long Distance Hurdle (3m, Grade 2)
CHAMP made a winning start to his campaign last season, and he can do the same here in this Grade 2 contest. As a Grade 1 winner, he is the highest-rated horse in the race – and with six wins from 11 starts over hurdles he has an excellent record over sticks.
The 10-year-old often produces his best at Newbury, as he has won three times in four starts here, including the Challow Novices’ Hurdle. He can do his Stayers’ Hurdle claims no harm with another big performance here.
Selection: Champ @ 7/4 with Paddy Power
3.40, Newbury – Coral Committed To Safer Gambling Handicap Hurdle (3m)
After back-to-back victories to begin his campaign, SHEARER‘s winning run came to an end at Cheltenham during the November Meeting, as he unseated his rider four hurdles from home. He was a little unlucky in that race as he was hampered by a faller.
The six-year-old does need to carry top weight in this 3m handicap hurdle, but it is unlikely that he has stopped improving, so this is a mark he should be able to work with.
Selection: Shearer @ 11/4 with Paddy Power
