Men’s Tennis to Make Fall Debut at Southern Miss

NEW ORLEANS – The defending Southland Conference regular season and postseason champions will make their return to the court this weekend. The New Orleans Privateers men’s tennis team will participate in the Southern Miss Invitational in nearby Hattiesburg, Miss.

The Privateers bring back a host of returners: six in all from their championship team. They include the primary No. 1 and No. 2 singles players in the lineup last year Marcel Volz and Max Heinzel. Volz was Southland Player of the Year while Heinzel won Southland Tournament MVP.

Also returning are Luke Joujan, Espen Lagarde, Matthew Armbruster and Mihajlo Drobnjakovic. Joujan and Lagarde each won double digit matches last season. Armbruster won eight singles matches in his freshman year and Drobnjakovic was 3-2 in singles in 2022. David Tesic also returns but is unavailable to play due to injury.

Two newcomers dot the roster. Karim Al-Amin comes from Germany where he was undefeated in singles over two seasons at Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium. Al-Amin was part of a team that was in the top ten at the German national championships and a conference runner-up in 2019.

Lilian Dubois comes from France where he was ranked in the Top 20 in Under-18 in his country. Dubois won the TC Vespin Tournament and he qualified for an ITF Grade 1 main draw tournament in France.

This tournament is one of four the Privateers are scheduled to compete in this fall. They will also host Nicholls, travel to ITA Regionals and play the Cajuns Classic in Lafayette in late October.
