Nov. 25—Logansport senior Kaiden Lucero has made his college choice.
Lucero signed to play baseball at Illinois Central College earlier this week.
“Honestly, I’m just really excited because ever since I was pretty little I always dreamed of growing up and playing college baseball,” Lucero said. “After finally finding a college to go play next year I’m really excited.”
Illinois Central is a JUCO located in East Peoria, Illinois. Lucero was offered as an outfielder and pitcher.
In two varsity seasons with the Berries, Lucero has hit .345 with two home runs, three triples, 11 doubles, 54 RBIs and 42 runs scored in 57 games. The Berries have gone 40-20 during that time and won a North Central Conference title in 2021.
Lucero has a good arm in the outfield and pitched in six games for the Berries his junior season, going 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA. He struck out 24 in 18 1/3 innings pitched. He pitched mostly in relief but had a complete-game win against West Lafayette.
The Berries will return seven starters from last year’s team that went 19-11 and finished runner-up in the NCC.
“I’m very excited for the senior season because we’ve got a lot of seniors this year and I think we have a chance to go pretty far,” Lucero said.
He added that Illinois Central gives him a chance to further his baseball career.
“Hall of Famer Jim Thome played there in college. So their program is a very top-tier junior college. They send out a lot of players to go play at four-year schools, mostly Division-I. So I think this is a very good stepping stone for me to move on to a very good four-year after this school,” he said.
Lucero added that his career goal is to become a sports medicine physician.
