Highest-scoring NHL playoff game: Where the Flames-Oilers 15-goal shootout ranks all time

If you fell asleep early during Game 1 of the Flames-Oilers second-round series, you probably had to do a triple-take when checking the box score.

The first playoff contest in the Battle of Alberta for 2022 ended a 9-6 win for the Flames. Calgary scored two goals in the first 51 seconds, was ahead at 5-1 and 6-2 at other points, but the Oilers battled back, eventually tying the game at 6-6 before the Flames potted three straight goals to win.

Matthew Tkachuk recorded his first career playoff hat trick while Connor McDavid had four points in the effort for the Oilers.

No one could save much in net. Mike Smith was pulled by the Oilers after allowing three goals on 10 shots, but Mikko Koskinen was not much better, giving up five on 37 shots faced. The winning goalie, Jacob Markstrom, had his worst showing in the 2022 postseason, stopping just 22 of the 28 shots he saw, ending the night with a win despite owning a .786 SV%.

It was the first time since 1993 that 15 goals were scored total in an NHL playoff game and now ranks in the top 10 all time on the list of most goals scored in a postseason game.
