Grinnell’s Trista Thompson holds the third best score in Iowa high school diving history

The BGM-Grinnell-Baxter Swimming and Diving team traveled to Marshalltown on Saturday, Sept. 17, to compete in the Bobcat Invitational. Ten teams participated and it was a tight race for 7-9 places. The Bear/Tigers/Bolts finished 8th with Trista Thompson setting the 3rd best score in state history.

Final score of the meet was 1. Johnson — 327; Lewis Central — 189; Linn-Mar — 145; Boone — 135; Marshalltown — 126; Indianola — 107; Ottumwa — 96; Grinnell — 95; Carroll — 94; Atlantic — 18.

Diving recap from Coach Deidre

“The divers finished another successful 11-dive meet with all three performing well and setting personal best scores. Nora Nicol finished 9th with a four point increase from last week at 308.55. Nora dove well and performed three new dives in her list. Camryn also dove well, especially after homecoming festivities kept her from her typical practice routine Thursday and Friday before the competition. Camryn finished 4th with a personal best score 26 points higher than last week at 395.55.”

“The highlight on the diving board was Trista Thompson absolutely demolishing her previous 11-dive school record of 509.45 to win the meet easily with a score of 550.10,” Coach Deidre said. “This is the third best score in Iowa high school history. She’s only 11 points from the state meet record, and she’s only going to get better! I’m so proud of Trista for getting to this point despite some minor setbacks early in the season. I admire her composure, leadership and support for her teammates, and her drive to improve her dives every day.”

Swimming recap from Coach Sarah

“The swimmers saw some impressive time drops and I was happy to see them push through some mental blocks and physical tiredness at the start of the meet. We are really showing other top teams in the state that we have lots of talented swimmers and it is only the middle of September.

“Josie Smith is now the second fastest 100 Fly swimmer in the history of GHS. She surprised me on Saturday as she did not feel great but then swam a 1:05.37 dropping a full second over her swim on Monday. Her goal in high school is to break the GHS 100 Fly swim record which is a 1:04.22 set in 1998 by Whitney Jensen. Della Pease had a fantastic swim in the 500 Free dropping 4 seconds off her personal best and that previous best time was set after tapering last season. She had a great swim and there are parts of her race that still need improvement so there is more time to drop.”
