Fireworks accident at Trash Pandas baseball game injures 1

One person was taken to the hospital Friday night after a fireworks accident at the Rocket City Trash Pandas game in Madison.

The victim had non-life-threatening injuries, according to Don Webster of HEMSI.

The incident occurred in the postgame fireworks show at Toyota Field when a part of the fireworks appeared to fly into the stands.

The Trash Pandas released a statement after the incident, saying that no fans were injured. Webster said the call to HEMSI came at 8:56 pm and the victim was transported by ambulance to Madison Hospital emergency room.

In a statement Saturday, Madison Fire & Rescue Chief David Bailey said the injured person transported to the hospital was a Trash Pandas employee. Bailey described the injury as a “slight leg injury.”

“Madison Fire & Rescue did respond to one paramedic unit and one engine company but did not need to provide patient care,” Bailey said in the statement.

He also said that Madison Fire and the Trash Pandas are investigating the incident.

“On Friday night during the Trash Pandas postgame fireworks show, one firework unexpectedly ignited, causing it to veer off course,” the team’s statement said. “No fans were harmed, and the fireworks vendor adamantly expressed that this has never happened before in over 40 years of their experience.

“Every Toyota Field fireworks show is always supervised by the Madison Fire and Rescue Departments. All parties are taking extreme precautions to ensure that this does not happen again.”

According to a video of the fireworks, it appeared the stray fireworks landed on the grass berm down the right field line.

The Trash Pandas, like most minor league baseball teams, have fireworks displays frequently during the season. The Trash Pandas have a fireworks display following every Friday home game as well as at other times during the season.
