Lexington, Ky. – The Western Carolina volleyball team received the USMC/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2021-22 Team Academic Award, the organization announced on Monday afternoon. Additionally, Western Carolina was one of only two Southern Conference members to be named to the Team Academic Honor Roll, which is comprised of the Top 20 percent of team GPA’s for each division. This marks the eighth consecutive season and the 12th time overall that the Catamounts have been honored, joining over 1,200 schools to receive the award this year.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
As a team, the Catamounts compiled a 3.64 GPA for the 2021-22 academic year.
Among the individual academic highlights from last year included Julia Gordon and Eden Punch, who were one of three WCU student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA and were both members of the SoCon All-Academic Team. Additional WCU student-athletes on the league’s All-Academic Team included Sydney Carlson, Destiny Dorsey, Merry Gebel, John Robinson, Ali Schreiber, Noelle Soldo, Kenzie Whiteand Livi Weidmann.
Combined, 16 Catamounts were named to the WCU Chancellor’s List in either the Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 semester with Erin Carpenter, Bailey Hartsough, Ollie Henderson, Sarah Janourova, Haley Multererand Brooklyn Poling joining those recognized above.
In addition to WCU, other SoCon members that earned the AVCA Team Academic Award in 2021-22 include ETSU, Samford, The Citadel, UNCG, Chattanooga, and Wofford.
