PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown men’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday night with a 64-53 win over Stony Brook at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Freshman Kalu Anya posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, sophomore Nana Owusu-Anane collected 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists on 6-of-13 shooting, and sophomore Lilly Jr. Cinema posted a team-high 19 points with five three-pointers, with 16 of those points coming in the second half. Senior Paxson Wojcik tallied seven points and five rebounds along with four assists and three steals.
“Winning is not easy and I’m just really happy with our guys and their grit, especially in the second half,” Men’s Basketball Head Coaching Chair Mike Martin ’04 said. “We defended really well and got good looks throughout the game, but they just didn’t fall. We were able to still extend the lead because of our defense and we were able to get going offensively in the second half.”
The Bears outrebounded Stony Brook 41-33, including 15-2 on the offensive glass and forced 21 turnovers. Offensively, Brown shot 32.3 percent (21-for-65) from the floor while going 10-for-28 from beyond the arc, while the Seawolves shot 40.4 percent (19-for-47) from the field and were 5-for- 19 from downtown.
Brown took its first lead of the game following a 5-0 run to go up 12-11 at the under-12 media timeout of the first half. Stony Brook followed with a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 22-14 with exactly eight minutes remaining in the half.
Brown went on to score 15 of the next 19 points to retake the lead 29-26 with two minutes left until halftime, but Stony Brook used a three-pointer in the closing seconds to hold a 31-30 lead at the break.
After going back and forth to start the second half, Brown took the lead for good on a triple by Lilly at the 16:45 mark to go up 39-36. Lilly later moved into double figures with another three at 7:59 to push the lead to nine, 52-43. Brown got the lead to double digits for the first time when Wojcik stole the ball and fed Anya for a layup in transition to push the score to 56-45. Lilly’s final triple of the evening pushed the lead to a game-high 13 with 3:20 to go, and the lead never shrunk below 10 for the remainder of the game.
Brown will return to action next Wednesday, November 23 when they welcome UMass Lowell to Pizzitola for a 7 pm tipoff.
