B. Braun Medical celebrates $200M, 310K-square-foot Lehigh Valley expansion

International medical device manufacturer B. Braun Medical Inc. on Thursday celebrated the opening of a $200 million-plus expansion on its campus outside Allentown.

The 310,000-square-foot addition in Hanover Township, Lehigh County, will add more than 200 jobs over the next several years to its on-site workforce of 1,500, the Bethlehem-based company said.

Jean-Claude Dubacher, chairman and CEO of B. Braun of America Inc., said the largely open layout of the 939 Marcon Blvd. expansion as it looks today will be transformed in coming months to revolutionize the manufacturing of medical devices.

“This manufacturing site will truly be the medical device plant of the future,” Dubacher said of the addition to its existing 901 Marcon Blvd. building.

B. Braun has operated in the Lehigh Valley since 1979, opening its Allentown area plant in 1985 and expanding it several times.

“The expansion will add much-needed capacity to manufacture life-sustaining infusion therapy devices used to treat millions of patients across the country,” the company said in a fact sheet on the expansion. “State-of-the-art digitalization and automation technologies are being used to improve efficiencies and seamlessly connect all production steps and business processes, creating a highly competitive smart factory.”

Numerous state and local elected officials spoke at Thursday’s ribbon-cutting, including Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Deputy Secretary of Technology and Innovation Steve D’Ettorre. He was on hand to present a $36,374 state grant to grow B. Braun’s apprenticeship program.

“The Wolf Administration commends B. Braun Medical on their impressive expansion and dedication to creating new jobs for Pennsylvanians,” D’Ettorre stated. “Manufacturing remains one of the commonwealth’s key industries. Seeing companies like B. Braun continue to grow and strengthen their presence in Pennsylvania helps further solidify our standing as a great place for manufacturers looking to relocate or expand operations.”

B. Braun says that as part of its workforce development program, it is partnering with local colleges and training schools to expand their “mechatronics” programs needed to step into the company’s positions. It also collaborates with other Lehigh Valley manufacturers on a region-wide apprenticeship program and works with schools and nonprofits to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics — STEM — education.

The state DCED acknowledged those partnerships with the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corp., Pennsylvania Apprenticeship & Training Office, Workforce Board Lehigh Valley and manufacturers like OraSure, Lutron and Crayola in creating the Industrial Training & Education Consortium of the Lehigh Valley (iTEC).

“B. Braun is proud to continue expanding our manufacturing presence in Pennsylvania with these new investments at our Allentown facility,” Dubacher stated. “We appreciate the efforts of DCED and the Wolf Administration to improve Pennsylvania’s business climate and partner with us to expand the availability of skilled workers needed to operate our facilities.”
